“PLURALITY OF BOSSES.”
SHEARER’S OBJECTIONS.
In the Federal Arbitration Court last Friday a shearer gave some interesting evidence. He stated that, whereas the price of his previous suit of clothes was £2/17/6, his present suit, which was of exactly the same material and make, had cost him £4/4/-. Counsel on the other side asked him if he did not think £4/4/- for | a suit was rather, luxurious; the reply being that he liked to live as well as he could, and pay his way. His “only banking account” was with the butcher and the baker. I He had nothing in me bank. I Witness was asked about how he
employed his time during the seven months of the year when there was no shearing in the country j and he said he took work at general labouring or ariving in the city. He did not, he added, take anything that turned up. Counsel: And what do you curtail your services to f Witness : Well, I believe in one boss, and I do not work where there is more than one. (Laughter.) His Honor: What do you mean by one boss ? Witness: I object to several bosses, and where you have to receive your orders from and obey more than one employer. His Honor: You mean von object to work where there are gradations of men about you all giving orders ? s Witness: Yes. On the question of wages, witness said he would not work for 7/a day. He wanted 8/-. Z C ounsel: Then you would rather be idle than take 7/- a day? Witness: Yes; if I had sufficient means to allow me to look round tor 8/- a day.
