QUEENSLAND SHOW.

SUCCESS OF HAWKE’S BAY BRED DRAUGHT HORSES. At the recent show at Toowoomba, Queensland, the Hon. J. D. Ormond was a very successful exhibitor of draught horses. In the brood mare class he was awarded first and champion with his five-year-old mare by Rutherglen, out of Jip, and had the additional satisfaction of beating the Queensland Government’s imported four-year-old mare by Memento, in. foal to Baron’s Pride, purchased from Messrs. A. and W. Montgomery, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, at 410 gs. The public endorsed the judges decision by an extraordinary demonstration of approval. The representative of the Gatton College, where the Scotch mare is sheltered, requested Mr. Ormond’s Queensland manager to put a price on the champion, but it is said to be doubtful if Mr. Ormond will sell at any price. Mr. Ormond is to be congratulated on his success, which is a splendid advertisement for the heavy draught horse which is still bred in parts of the Dominion. Pleasing as the result must be to Mr. Ormond, it will be even more gratifying to Mr. John Boag, Brookside, and to tnose in charge of the Karamu, Hawke’s Bay, stud, as the Queensland champion is a full sister to Mrs. J. D. Ormond’s great two-year-old colt Bonny Glen, exhibited at the last Metropolitan Show in Christchurch. This clearly proves that a good “big un” will always beat a good “little un.” This province cannot help claiming a share in the satisfaction ,as the Queensland champion mare was bred in this district. And it is with interest we await the advent of “Bonny Glen” in Melbourne, as he is fresh in our memory from the last Hawke’s Bay show, where competent judges described him as one of the finest heavy draught colts bred in the Dominion.
