SMUGGLING AT KAIPARA.
CAPTAIN’S OPEN CONFESSION 4 ) Auckland, June 15. The barquentine Volador, on arrival at Kaipara from Sydney on. Tuesday, was boarded by the Ona- > toms officers, who seized alny quantity of uncustomed goods. In the police court this morning Captain Walter Deliver was charged with having made a false declaration to the Customs, and having knowingly harboured and concealed bn the Volador uncustomecF goods, tobacco, wine, spirits, etc., • to the value of £55. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined £lOO on each of the two charges, the fine on the first nhatgjfr being subsequently reduced to £25. Defendant exonerated his crew and the owners of the vessel, stating to* alone was responsible. He admitted he had also smuggled goods in Australia. The magistrate said this was n deliberate case, and as it was the third case of a similar type therecould be no sympathy with the defendant. “ The pitcher to the, well once too often.”
