YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. AT HASTINGS. The morning was gloriously fine yesterday, but in the aftnn?non a cold wind sprung an. and during the match at Hastings a light shower fell. The grounds were rather on the heavy side. The play was as follows:—
MEN’S SENIORS. ATHLETIC (4) v. DRAPERS (1). This was the only one played in Hastings. From the start the home team had the advantage. After some loose play near the Athletic circle, the ball was passed to Johnston, who scored. More close play followed in favour of the Athletics, but the Draper forwards would make occasional runs, and from one of these Tankard scored a good goal for the visitors. No further score was registered in the first spell, but early in the second spell McCarthy and Johnston each scored a goal. Some good rushes by the Drapers were made, but Hooper, the Athletic full-back, saved well. Shortly before time McCarthy scored another goal for the winners, and the game ended Athletic 4, Drapers i. For the winners Rees played a good game on the wing, but the other forwards were “off colour.” Nepi, Johnston and Cassin were several times penalised for off-side play. Bullick, in the halves, was a tower of strength, while Hooper, the full-back, played a sound game. For the Drapers Tankard was the only man who played in form. The others seemed to make a practice of trying to get in each others way, and beating each other for the ball. Mr. H. H. Bell controlled the game in his usual efficient manner.
AT NAPIER.
SENIORS.
ORIENTAL v. ZINGARI.
This game was far from being a good exhibition. Matthews, for Oriental, scored two goals, and Blake, for Zingari, one. This goal of Clark’s was made just about half a minute before the game concluded. Wiffen and several of the forwards for Zingari did good work.
ALBION v. UNION. This match was keenly contested from beginning to end. Shatky for Albion made one goal, and McKay for Union made one goal, the game thus ending in a draw. JUNIORS. DRAPERS (1) v. ORIENTAL (nil). This match was played on Nelson Park yesterday. A strong cold wind with showers of rain tendered it extremely uncomfortable for the spectators and the players alike. Tom Redshaw, for Drapers, made the only score of the game. “Dick” Smale, for Drapers, played a very good game. Although Oriental made several splendid attempts to score, they were always repulsed, and the game ended Drapers 1, Oriental nil.
