H.B. COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the above council yesterday, the following reports were dealt with: — PETANE. On the 13th April the chairman and (r. Clark met a number of settlers, who laid before them a number of requirements in and about the Petane township. The drainage from the hill at the back of Petane comes through the man street, and overflows into some of . the residences. This is not a difficult matter to deal with if the water-table is graded an J a lit‘!e filling done between it and the ; houses, and perhaps a little voi»- ! crete channelling done. The fences on the road leading to the Esk bridge site are encroaching on the road in many places. These should , be put back. A hollow requires filling in at the junction of the Beach road where it leaves the Esk' road. The Beach road reqirr.s metalling. Several hollows require filling near the township to prevent water from stagnating. Ther? is a road at the back of the ownship called Terrace road. We were asked if this road could be taken over by the council. The roa I !ukwas laid off some years ago without reference to the council, a:> I has been done in such a way as to render it useless as a public road. The gradient is so steep that the road, if made, would be a most dangerous one. We suggest that the owners of property be asked to dedicate a line of road giving a gradient of about I in 14. and failing their compliance, the council decline to undertake any liability for this road. —Adopted.

FARNDON PARK. Your committee mN representatives of the llockey Club and the dive Football Club on 13th May, to try and arrange an apportionment of the playing proceeds between these two clubs and the Rugby Football dub. No one came to represent the football club. After looking over the ground, the dive Hockey anti Football dubs agreed to share the ground now used by the Hockey Club, and in this way made room for the Rugby Union dub. We suggest that a tow of trees be cut down that were planted some years ago to shelter the tennis courts. If this were done it would "leave much more room for games, and would give another football ground. A few more willow trees planted near the artesian well would be of great benefit to the ground, and would not interfere with games.—Report adopted. OTHER MATTERS. J. H. McNiven and other petitioners asked that a - drain be cleared out. —On the motion of Cr. 'Simson, the engineer is to report on the matter. E. Tarran asked for consideration on accbunt of his metalling contract being stopped. He had made arrangements for a fresh engine and a stock of coal.—Work to be proceeded with when weather is farcNWable, and question of compensation could not be considered. J. Conway asked that steps le taken to prevent the flooding of his Raureka property.—Matter re-

ferred to Committee of Crown JLaiscls. The Napier Celebration Committee asked that the council appoint a representative.—Chairman appointed. Bull Bros, asked if they could cart timber over Puketitiri road in winter.—Referred to special committee. The Sanitary Inspector asked the council to serve notice on Jim Dunn to abate nuisance.—Notice to be served. R. Morley and others asked that roads be metalled at Mahora.— Overseer to attend to it. John McHardy, Petane, was granted a slaughtering license. BRIDGE MAINTENANCE. Cr. Simson moved, in accordance with notice of motion, “ That all bridges in the county be 'a charge against the general account.” He pointed out that as the rivers neared the sea they cost very much more to bridge than further back in the county. Therefore they j should be a charge upon the gener- i al account. He would not say all bridges—not the very small ones. i Cr. Bennett seconded, and saidi he thought it was only fair that those further up should pay something towards the big bridges. [ Cr. Clark said that there was something in the question. I Cr. Crosse said he would oppose the motion, as it would strike a, blow at the Riding accounts, which had proved so successful. Cr. Shrimpton thought the motion should be more definite by specifymg bridges. In reply, Cr. Simson said he ■only wanted the main bridges in each riding maintained. At the request of the councillors, the motion was withdrawn to allow of a schedule of bridges to be pre pared and submitted to a future meeting. ; TBfe council then rose.
