THE GREAT NORTHERN.

HOW THE RACE WAS WON.

The followine is the ” Auckland Star's” description of the race

When they started on their long journey. Paritutn. Pleiades. Ant arctir. and t orazon were quickest t». the trrsr fewe. hut a'err iing the hill luiddie was the h ad' r. follow■d by A nt.ie, Par it ut::. Hunnkaha. Reservoir. Lorh Pyne. Le Beau. Fieiades, t'ornzi'i. and Red MHlregor. with So! a lona way last. On top «»f the Lili Antarvlie took command, and when I key came to the water was six lengths in front of Laddie arid Paritutii. with Loch Fyne, Pleiades, and Corazon in that order. Ret! Met Iregor toppling over into the water. The next fence was fatal to Reservoir, which turned a complete somersault, his rider being thrown clear. Going along the back and up the hill the second time. Antarctic was still the pilot, followed by Paritutu. Hunakaha. Corazon. Leßean, Loch Fyne. Pleiades, and Sol tailing away in the rear. Pari tutu joined Antarctic coming down the hill, and the pair raced to the water and into the straight together, Pari tutu banging into the fence and coming down, leaving Antarctic to lead the way over the double, with Corazon as his nearest attendant, and Hunakaha, Le Bead, Loch Fyne, Pleiades. and Sol racing in that order. The se cond fence of the double brought down Hunakaha, and Pleiades fell over the stone wall. These mishaps reduced the field considerably, a further reduction taking place by Laddie pulling up. Going up the hiU the last time there was little between Corazon and Antarctic, while Le Beau moved up, and these were the leading division at the top of the hill, with Loch Fyne and Sol following. The lastnamed came down at the second fence on the hill, Corazon leading down the incline and into the straight, pulling double, with Antarctic and Le Beau next. Loch Fyne being hopelessly beaten. Coming to the last fence Corazon was. eased, and Antarctic, putting in a run, looked like getting to him, but it was only on sufferance, for Corazon easily drew out again, winning by four lengths from Antarctic, which was a dozen lengths in front of Le Beau, with Loth Fyne, the only other to finish, a long way back. Time. Bmin 9sev. None of the jockeys who fell were hurt.
