SUNDAY PICTURE SHOWS.
CONSTERNATION AMONG PROPRIETORS. Sydney, May 28. Consternation has been caused among the proprietors of the places of entertainment where Sunday concerts are held by an intimation from the Chief Secretary's office. Some time ago Mr. Wood, Chief Secretary in the previous Government, went into the matter of the shows given on Sunday nights, and the licensees of a number were given time in which to obtain films for cinematographs, of a sacred character. Apparently the order has not been complied with, for the Acting Chief Secretary (Mr. Flowers) has had the whole matter under review, and has issued new orders. The licensees have been notified that in future at sacred concerts authorised under the Public Halls and Theatres Act the music must be of a sacred kind, and the cinematograph films must be something suitable, such as those of a scenic character. The applicants for Sunday permits are given to understand that the socalled “dramatic” or “pathetic” films and ordinary secular music will not be allowed. Finally it is directed that the collection permit-
ted under the regulations shall be taken up at the close of the performance, not as a practical demand for a price of admission at the door.
