Before his departure the crew of the Irene and several of his pupils presented Mr. Bennet with an illuminated address in which Kis professional talent and many other sterling good qualities were extolled. Advice just received at Wellington from England intimates that the Chapter-General of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem has selected Mrs. W. B. Fisher, honorary secretary of the District Nursing Guild of St. John. Wellington, as a member of the Order, and that the selection has been sanctioned by King George. - Miss Ava Symonds whose violin solo at the Hastings Harmonic Society’s concert on Wednesday night charmed and delighted every person in the huge audience, has been selected by Mr. Gorlitz, to assist in the orchestra accompanying the Sheffield Choir. Captain Ferris has been 'or *6 years associated with the ’ fe of this district. He came to Gisborne in 1865. at the time of the Maori war, arriving with the Hawke s Bay defence force Jn H.M.S. Brise 1 He served through the war here and on the West Coast, being twice wounded. He was in charge of themilitary camp at Waikaremoana for some time. After the cessation of hostilities. Captain Ferris settled down in the district.
