' ARMY SERVICE CORPS. Captain Knox, of the Imperial Army, who has been appointed to; the New Zealand Defence Force to i organise the Army Service Corps, arrived in Wellington by the Turakina on Wednesday. THE TERRITORIALS. Major-General Goilley. Commander of New Zealand Defence: Forces, inspected the Companies of the Hasting and Napier Garrisons at the Garrison Hall, Napier, last evening. The following was the Parade State. ■ Staff Lieut.-Col. Hislop, Acting-Major Simms, Capt. Quartermaster Fraser, Lieut.-Adjutant Skelly, Sergt.-Major McNair,. Hastings Rifles (50), Captain! Holderness and Lieut. Daly ; F. I Battery (43), Captain Andrew and Lieut. Fraser, with Capt. Roberts (unattached); Ranfurly Rifles (37),: Lieut. Pirie; City Cadets (23), Capt. Jones; Battalion Band (20). The following officers were also on parade :—Colonel Russell (Brigadier of the Wellington (district ‘ Mounted Corps), Major Sandtman (commanding the 9th Mounted Regiment), Major Ringland (Reserve ‘of Officers), Major de Lisle, Cap- : tain Coleburne, Lieutenants Beamish, Chambers. Macfarlane and Le Quesne, Chaplains Canon Mayne and Rev. J. A. Asher, and other commissioned and non-commissioned officers representing the Hawke’s Bay Mounted Rifles. A number of unattached and retired officers were, also present.
Major-General Godley was attended by Colonel Burnet-Stuart and Captain Thornton. There were large numbers of citizens present. The individual companies were each put through company and manual drill. Two field guns were brought into the hall, and the members of the F. Battery were inspected in thenwork.
At the conclusion of the evolutions General Godley briefly addressed the men. He said he was pleased to have ths opportunity of inspecting them. He especially thanked the Hastings Company for turning out so strong and for coming so far to be inspected by him. He was very well satisfied with the general turnout of the pe n. they were all well set up. and he thought the three companies under Lieut.-Col. Hislop formed a splendid nucleus for the stronger companies which were to be formed. lie said that when he came to inspect them again the companies would have their fid! stre n gth of 129. and if they conducted themselves then as they had on this occasion he would be more than satisfied. He complimented the members of the F. Battery on the good'start they had made, and said that he was already justified in calling them a good battery, and expected that when the new guns arrived they would be very efficient. He* hoped that when next he visitedHastings and Napier the companies! would be three times as strong,; and that he would be able to see them in the field where he would much rather see them.
