HAVELOCK NORTH.

(Own Correspondent.) PROPOSED PUBLIC LIBRARY. Judging by the small attendance at the meeting held in the Public Library last evening for the purpose of forming a library committee and a town committee, it seems to be a matter of grave doubt whether the residents of this charming suburb have any concern in such affairs at the present time. There were at the meeting:— Messrs. C. A. Fitzroy, R. B. Holmes, H. lan Simson. W. W. Smart, E. Hallett, J. M. Miller. W. F. Evans, S. Graham, and Frisken.

Mr. Fitzroy was voted to the chair.

Mr. Smart, who convened the meeting, explained that he did so in order to revive interest in the Public Library. This contained about a thousand good books, which could be made use of. and the supply of daily newspapers from all over the Dominion could also be arranged. He thought Havelock could support a library and have a librarian in attendance two days each week. A reading room would bring the residents into social intercourse. His idea was £o form a town committee to act in conjunction with the library committee in keeping in touch with the wants of the town, but seeing the small attendance, it would be better to content themselves with the setting up of a committee to place the library on a sound working basis. Mr. Simson said the people of Clive had erected a public hall, a library and a gymnasium, and he thought residents of Havelock should be able to provide the same.

Mr. Holmes stated that he held a credit balance of 14/9 from the previous committee, and a Government subside of £6 6 4.

Messrs. Smart, Hallett, Graham, Holmes, Evans, Frisken, West, and Simson were appointed a committee to take steps to have the library placed on a business footing and to report to a future meeting.

Mr. Smart undertook to have the library kept open on two days during each week pending further arrangements.

POSTAL CONVENIENCES. The following petition to be presented to the Postmaster-General is at present being circulated here : — "Ve. the undersigned, on behalf of the residents of Havelock North and its neighbourhood, most respectfully ask that a letter-carrier be appointed in comiection with the TU-,r Office lie) e. It i- uuneeessarv to point out the good which would awriie fix.m such appointment, but we consider that the postal busiTuess now warrants such an appointment. and there is no fear of the business falling off as the popula- . tion is rapidly increasing.” The i general opinion is that the request I will not be granted till the new post office is erected. DAYLIGHT SAVING.

Copies of a circular setting out the advantages of the Daylight Saving proposal (best known as the Daylight Saving Bill) which Air. T. K. Sidey, ALP., intends re-intro-ducing during the next session of Parliament, were distributed by Mr. C. A. Fitzx-oy at last night's meeting. The proposal is to advance New Zealand time by one hour during the summer months. The clocks will be put on one hour in the spring and back again in the autumn. In order to impress the Government with the extent to which the electors of the Dominion favour the proposal, a monster petition from electors all over New Zealand will be presented to Parliament at the commencement of the session. Mr. Fitzroy has a copy of the petition for signature. RECREATION GROUND. A meeting of the Recreation Ground Cofmittee was held last evening. The business transacted was of but little public importance.
