NEWS ITEMS.

The Ashburton County Council expended £1648 6 3 in the district on small birds for the year ended March 31st. It has been decided to discontinue supplying poisoned grain to the farmers, but the whole question of the destruction of small ■birds will be discussed at the next Council meeting. Dr. M. R. Neligan, former Anglican Bishop of Auckland, writing from Scarboro' to the Venerable Archdeacon Calder, congratulates the Diocese upon having been led to choose for the bishop one of whom so much hearty good is spoken, and from whose solid and devout work so much hopeful anticipation may be formed. The letter concludes: —“Behind the new Bishop of Auckland stands —as I know full well from experience—a solid mass of clergy and laity, who, almost to a man, will trust their bishop and follow him loyally, relieving that, because the bishop trusts them, they can trust the bishop. With high hopes for the work in the old diocese, and with love from Mrs. Neligan and r.vself, both to our pakeha and Maori friends, believe me, your affectionate former bishop, M. R. Neligan.”
