MOTORMAN’S MANSLAUGHTER CASE.
I PRISONER LENIENTLY DEALT WITH. Auckland, May 29. ' In the Supreme Court, Justice Edwards passed sentence on Wm. Ernest Dawe, the motbrman who was found guilty last session of the manslaughter of a fellow motor- | man by the bump mg of one tram i into another. His Honor said the fact that earlier in the evening the • prisoner had received a shock through narrowly missing a drunken man should have made him more cautious. The plea that his ! attention was distracted by the I constant ringing of the bell was no j excuse for inattention to what was >in front. He w*as inclined to think I the accident was the result of mis- ■ calculation of the. speed of the car ■ and getting too close to the standing car ahead. Taking into coni sideration the prisoner’s good character and the jury s recommendaI tion to mercy, and the views of ; Judges of the Appeal Court, pri- ; soner would be leniently dealt with. ] A fine of £25 was imposed.
