CORRESPONDENCE

.It must te distinctly unierstood we are not to be identified with the opinions expressed by Correspondents in our columns.] THE RAILWAY WORKSHOPS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—lf the people of Hastings have a scrap of energy about them, in a matter which largely concerns the interests of the town, they will start a big, solid, agitation to induce the Government to shift the railway workshops to Hastings. It is merely a commonsense proposal to have them here, and we only require to stir ourselves a bit, and we will get them here despite Mr. J. V. Brown. M.P., and his parochialism. Is there any other town in the Dominion with railway workshops similarly situated to those of Napier I For the past 25 years the country districts have periodically been cut off from Napier by floods and all the engines and railway plant have been locked up in the alleged “capital.” On one occasion a solitary engine had to deal with all the traffic between Te Aute and Whakatu, for about five days. Mr. A. Dillon is, I believe, the member for this district, and I hope that he will emerge from his suburban retreat and take this matter up. There are several thousand reasons why the workshops should be in Hastings, but there is only one reason why they are not here—the apathy of the Hastings citizens. I hope that some of the leading townspeople, the Mayor and Councillors for instance, will take this matter up. —I am, etc., L. W. FOWLER.
