THE RIVER BOARD.

The first meeting of the Central River Board yesterday was entirely satisfactory and we believe that the ratepayers will agree that the Board has given evidence of intention to grapple comprehensively with the problems before it. The appointment of the Hon. J. D. Ormond was a graceful act and in. some slight measure rewards him for the deep interest he has taken in the constitution of the Board. But apart from the question of paying a well-deserved tribute to the honourable gentleman, it is safe to say that his lengthly knowledge of the district and wholehearted interest in the welfare of the Board make him admirably suitable for the position of chairman. His address at the opening ‘of the proceedings yesterday was

*5 lucid. and instructive, anti ire that riretiDistances 1 made ir ismpossibel to place a biller record of it before the public. In default --f the Government providingengineer*to report upon the disttivi requested the Boaid has had to face the task its»df. It will be difficult to obtain professional services which will *iiit all parties, but the members of the Board display inclination to look broadly at the question and it is sincerely to be hoped no local prejudices will interfere with the welfare of the district. What we want to see is the best possible man appointed. Local knowledge is. to our mind, a natural advantage, and we feel sure that if the Board continues to view the matter with an open mind a wise selection will be made. In the meantime we extend to Board the best wishes for judicious and honourable conduct of the work placed in its hands.
