Major Sandtman left to-day on a visit to Gisborne. Major General and Mrs. Godley left by the Mokoia for the north today. Constable and Mrs. Doyle left for Shannon by the express from Napier this morning. Mr. Halley. Conciliation Commissioner, left Napier by the express train this morning. Lord Curzon has been elected President of the Royal Geographical Society. A Sydney message states that Mr. Vardon, golfer, has definitely decided to visit Australia and New Zealand. Another early settler, Mrs. Williams Pratt, died at Christchurch yesterday, aged 83. She came to Nelson in 18-13 and to Canterbury in 1851. Messrs. W. Grant, F. J. Tonkin, and S. Tombs left Hastings this morning for Hamilton on business in connection with the formation of a permanent picture syndicate in that town. Mr. H. E. Crawshaw, of the Bank of New Zealand, Leeston, has received notice of his transfer to Christchurch. His place at Leeston will be taken by Mr. C. Breeze, of Greytown. Last evening Mr. Claude H. Haigh arrived in Napier to make arrangements for the appearance of the Scarlet Troubadours at the Theatre Royal, on June 2nd, 3rd, and sth. Lieutenant-Colonel A. Banchop, C.M.G., New Zealand Defence Force, now studying at the Staff College, Camberley, has been selected for attachment to the Royal Artillery at Salisbury Plain for a month’s instruction. Mr. Newbold, of Papakura, has received cable news of the death of his mother-in-law in the Old Country 7 and he will leave New Zealand, with Miss Newbold, in about a fortnight’s time. He may possibly return to New Zealand but has not yet made any definite plans. Mr. Fritz Reiher, an old resident of Hastings, died yesterday at his residence in Ferguson street. He has lived in Hastings something over sixteen years. The funeral will leave his late residence for Hastings cemetery, to-morrow, at 2.30 p.m. Mr. Alfred Cox. who represented Heathcote in Parliament from 1863 to 1865, and Timaru from 1866 to 1868, died at Christchurch yesterday, aged 86. He had land in South Canterbury and Waikato until 25 years ago, when he retired. He was editor of the well-known reference book, “Men of Mark.” in New Zealand.

Major W. G. Braithwaite, D. 5.0., Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Captain J. K. Cochrane, and Captain W. R. Pinwell, have been asked to coine to New Zealand, to be appointed to various districts as General Staff officers of the third degree, at a salary of £550 a year. Major Braithwaite has notified his acceptance of the offer. At the Clarendon. Hotel last evening a few residents from Shakespeare road and the surrounding hills assembled to present Mrs. Doyle, wife of Constable Doyle, with a small purse of sovereigns. Mr. Simmonds made the presentation and Mr. Burdekin accepted on behalf of Mrs. Doyle. A clock was also presented to Mrs. Doyle by Mr. J. Nelson, and Mr. J. Biss in a witty speech accepted the gift on behalf of the lady. The members of the Napier police force last evening presented Constable Doyle—who left this morning on transfer to Shannon— with a travelling rug.. In making the presentation Const aide Burnell spoke concerning the good qualities of Mr. Doyle as a police officer and as a comrade. Other speakers spoke to the same effect. Constable Doyle, in a short speech, thanked those present for their kindly feelings towards him and said that he would always have pleasant recollections of his stay in Napier.
