LYNCHING CRIMINAL NATIVES. [press association. —copyright], Capetown, May 23. An organised attempt was made at Port Elizabeth to lynch a native guilty of a criminal assault on a girl. The police at Bergville, Natal, frustrated an attempt to lynch a native attempting a criminal assault on two ladies. Mr. Lewis, the leading citizen of Bulawayo, killed a native who was accused of indecency towards his little girls. DRASTIC ACTION. (Received 24, 10.40 a.m.) Capetown, May 23. Lewis went to the newspaper office and caused the native newsboys to be paraded. He identified one whom he accused of indecent overtures to his girls, and then marched the native to some vacant ground behind the office and shot him dead. He then surrendered to the police and was charged with murder, but was released on £3OOO bail. Public opinion is entirely favourable to the accused.
