STEEL WORKS CLOSED DOWN. [press association. —copyright]. London, May 23. Owing to the depression the Ebbw Vale steelworks and Coke Ovens, employing 3500 men will be closed indefinitely from 31st instant. FEMALE CIVIL SERVANTS. (Received 24, 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, May 24. Cabinet has decided to make the minimum wage of women workers in the Government service, where not covered by the Wages Board award, £llO per annum. CAMBRIAN MINERS. London, May 23. The minority of the council of the South Wales Miners’ Federation declined to recommend the Cambrian men to accept the agreement. Delegates from all parts of the coalfields meet to consider the agreement on Saturday. If it is rejected contrary to Hie advice of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain, the latter may withhold its weekly contribution of £3OOO to the strike funds. AN APPEAL TO THE COLONIES [per press association.] Wellington, May 23. Mr. McLaren, M.P., has received a letter from Mr. Keir Hardie appealing for funds for the relief of miners who went on strike at Rhondda Valley, South Wales, last September. Mr. Hardie states that as no settlement has been arrived at and the dispute may go on for some time, there is a good deal of suffering, and there are hundreds who arc not in receipt of strike pay from the union. Relief funds have been opened up, and a committee has authorised Mr. Hardie to make an appeal to the miners of New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa on their behalf. Moneys may be sent to Mr. Hardie, addressed to him at the House of Commons. Mr. McLaren has sent copies of the letter to Mr. J. Glover, secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, and to Mr. James Young, secretary of the New Zealand Federation. of Labour (Trades and Labour Council), asking them to appeal to the unions affiliated to their federations for help.
