REPLY TO CRITICS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In reply to Mr. Fowler and other critics, I would like to say that I am a peace-loving individual, but if attacked will leave no stone unturned, even though it may have laid untouched for twenty years, to help me make good my defence. Unfortunately an important port of Mr. Adam Campbell’s credential was omitted, by mistake, or I think those interested in the work to be done by the Rivers Board would admit that it has considerable bearing on my fitness for the position I sought on the Board. Whether it is better to rely in an election of this kind on such reasons as I have given or to publish a nomination paper carving twenty-two signatures of electors pledged to support and thereby deprived of their right of choice—to say nothing of the violation of the secrecy of the ballot —I am content to leave your readers to judge. JOHN LANE. P.S. —This is my last say in this matter, Mr. Editor. Whether a member of the Board or not I shall be glad to do all in my power to assist to help minimise the misfortunes of my fellow settlers.—J. L. Hastings, May 19, 1911. [The part of the credential -was not published owing to it being encircled with pencil marks, which printers understand to mean “not for publication.” It reads as follows :— “Mr. Lane has acquired a knowledge of the art of preparing plans, surveying, levelling, computation of areas, and the general work of a surveyor. He has himself done considerable levelling for drainage works for me, and plotted his sections. doing all the necessary calculations, with such results as indicate accuracy, method and neatness.”—Ed.]
