PLUNKET NURSE SOCIETY.
HASTINGS DISTRICT. A general meeting of the Hastings District Plunket Nurse Society was held in St. Matthew’s Flail on Wednesday afternoon to consider the advisability of transferring the sum in hand (£200) from the Floral Fete Fund to the fund of the society, owing to the society being considerably in debt, caused partly by subscriptions not coming in as anticipated.
There were in all ton ladies present and two gentlemen, and Mrs. J. H. Williams presided over the meeting.
Reports were read which showed that the society was not doing the amount of work that it did in the past.
Airs. Williams attributed this to a belief that the present society made a charge for its nurses’ services, whereas the Plunket Society did not make a charge. That idea was absolutely wrong. The present District Plunket Nurse Society was being run on exactly the same lines as the former Plunket Society, with the exception that it undertook district work as well as the Plunket work. Tne charges were exactly the same as in the past, namely, annual subscription 5/-, or more at the option of the subscriber, but those mothers who could not afford 5/~ were not expected to pay. The objects of the society were to help and abvise young and inexperienced mothers.
Mr. J. W. Bates attributed the falling off in the society’s work to the fact of the name having been changed to District Plunket Society. He did not think thei e was any less need for the society to-day than in the past, but simply that a wrong impression had got about. The question was raised as to whether it would be advisable to strike out the word "district” and to continue as a Plunket society pure and simple. Air. . Shrimpton he did not think the society would bp a Plunket and a District Nurs« Society, it must be either m:c -r the other, as they were two distinct societies. He suggested Uk lhe question he left over to he nns.it(r< d at tlie annual nieetimr v. hen there would doubtless be a .a>p‘t attendance.
Mr. Shrimpton’ s suggestion was adopted. RcuarJing finances it wa° s< ’ved to ask the trustees 10 tran-h r the balance of the fund from the 1 lorai l-ete Fund to the present society.
Lmi\e of absence for <- r - --m;rhs was iinuih'd to yhqq ElG.r WiE:.-,t ,s (treasurer) who is leaving U.r. trict to visit England, and Mrs. McLf-mJ nas appointed treasurer during Mrs. Williams' absence.
