PUKETITIRI ROAD.

A meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council was held this morning for the purpose of meeting the representatives of the timber trade to discuss the heavy traffic on Puketitiri road. Present: Crs. Chambers (chairman), Rathie, Crosse, Donnelly, Stead, Shrimpton, and Clark. Messrs. W. A. Smith, John Holt, and Robert Holt represented the millers. Before the meeting commenced the Chairman asked for an expression of opinion as to whether the proceedings should be open to the press. So far as he could see there was no reason why the press should not be present, but the millers had asked if the discussion was to be open. Crs. Crosse and Donnelly thought that the meeting should be open, and Mr. Smith, for the millers, made no objection. The chairman then briefly outlined the object of the meeting. He pointed out that the amount of £1786 had been spent on the road last year. The rate was only about £2OOO so that nearly the whole amount of the rate was expended on the maintenance of the main road and the by roads had to suffer. The Council had come to the decision that the contribution of the millers was quite inadequate and they expected a more liberal donation. The question really was whether the Council should call on the millowners to repair the damage done at the end of each season or arrange for maintenance on a contributory basis. Mr. W. A. Smith quoted figures showing that the millers had contributed quite a fair share towards the upkeep of the mad, and he felt that work for the amount pjiid had not been put on the road. The question of millers taking a back loading of metal was discussed and opinion was expressed that some practical good could be done in this direction. The question of grades on the load were also mentioned, but it was looked upon as, a very expensive matter to make alterations. (Left sitting.)

The Kaiser and Kaiserin have started for London. It is understood the N.S.W. Government intends to lower the income tax limit to £2o<).
