THE ANTARCTIC.
DR. MAWSOX’S GREAT SCHEME. (Received 13, 8.40 a.m.) London, May 12. The “Daily Mail” states that Sir : E. Shackleton’s appeal on behalf of Dr. Mawson has been an immense success. Dr. Mawson’s ship leaves the Thames at the end of 1 June, and goes to Melbourne, from ! thence to Hobart, which will be the final port of departure. The expedition is to start from Tasmania instead of New Zealand to get the advantage of a wind which should take it almost direct I to its destination, whereas starting from New Zealand it would be cari ried far to the west of that point. ; The plan on reaching the Antarctic is to distribute the expedition in four parties along the 2000 miles and more of coast between Cape Adare and Caussberg, after which the boat will sail away again for an ocean graphic and magnetic survey of the unknown Southern Ocean. Sledging parties will be sent out to explore the coast line, and one expedition will be made to the Magnetic Pole from the opposite direction to the one previously taken. During those ■*• months of hard wo’k, when, as Dr. ■ Mawson says, they will be so busy with then’ observations that they will have no time to read, and therefore will hardly require a library except, for reference. the parties are not to be cut off from civilisation, or rather from the. news of civilisation. The camps will be in wireless communication with each other and with the Bluff and Sydney, and it may be said here that the colder the air the further will a wireless message travel.
