ATTEMPTED SUICIDE
AT HASTINGS. Arthur Thomas, aged about 35 years, employed at the Tomoana Freezing Works, attempted suicide at his residence in Kararnu road, Hastings, last evening. Thomas was seen about 10 p.m. going in the direction of Hastings, calling for someone to go for a doctor, and was subsequently found on the verandah of Dr. Storey’s house with an ugly gash across the throat, from four to five inches long, w’hich barely missed the jugular vein. Dr. Storey put nine stitches in the wound, and about midnight the man was sent to the Napier Hospital. It is stated that Mrs. Thomas was away from home when her husband committed the rash act, and that a bottle containing liquor was found on a table at the house. It is further conjectured that Thomas repented after inflicting the wound, and set out to go for medical aid, and on reaching Dr. Storey’s verandah, collapsed from loss of blood. He was formally charged at the Hastings Police Court this morning with attempting to take his life, and on the application of Sergeant Hogan, was remanded to appear on Friday, May’ 19. Thomas is still an inmate of the Hospital and did not appear at the Court.
