! Knight 6.7. Expansion 6.7. HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB. Al Tl MN MEETING. FIRST DAY. FURTHER NOTES ON YESTERi DAY'S RACING. } Judging by results, the postpone--1 ment of the above meeting cannot j be said to have materially affected success of the fixture, for the attendance on the opening day was nearly if not quite up to that of previous years. Speculation on i the totalisator was very heavy, the sum put through the machine aggregating £10.717, as against £6631 10 - invested on the first day of last year’s autumn meeting. Even taking into consideration the fact that nineteen bookmakers plied their calling at the last Autumn venture, the figures for yesterday can be said to be more than satisfactory. The Karamu Hurdle race was full of excitement, for after getting going quickly Reumac fell at the first jump, Longner following suit at rhe top of the straight. Then when Corazon and' Whakaweira appeared to have the race to themselves, they were joined by Hoanga just at the top of the straight. Flynn made a lucky recovery when Whakaweira made a
faulty jump at the last fence, and the race home was a great one, only a short head separating first and second at the finish. There were three spills during the day. The Rabbiter fell at the obstacle in front of the stand in the Longlands Hurdles, his pilot (P. O’Brien) escaping with a severe shaking. In the Karamu Hurdles, Reumac (W. Young) came down at the first fence, and Longner (A. McConnor) came to grief at the hurdle at the entrance to the straight. In each instance the riders escaped with nothing more serious than bruises and a severe
shock. Manupai. Thrave, Merry Lad, and Ngakau were scratched in the Poukawa Hack Handicap. Melologue, Perceller, and Axis were always near the front. Half-way down the straight Axis forged ahead of Perceller, and full of running, won by a neck, a length between second and third. Time,
Imin l-ssec. A feature of the Karamu Hurdle race was the wonderful “recovery” made by F. Flynn. His mount. Whakaweira. negotiated the timber at tlie entrance to the straight with an awkward swerve, which caused Flynn to slide over the horse's shoulder, his legs almost touching the ground. However, he succeeded in regaining the saddle,
and furthermore snatched a victory from Hoanga. whose rider was I obviously caught napping. Flynn I was loudly applauded on returning Ito the birdcage. | Vice-Admiral was made a big I favourite for the Hawke’s Bay ! Cup, Bliss second choice, then J Lady Mensehikoff and Fort WilI liam. Bliss and Separator were i responsible for the pact' being | sound right through. Fort \\ il- ! liam. although he had 8.10 <>n his] ! back. was never far away,, and J '< when Young got clear of lhe att en-! jlious of Bliss and Separator at the! j top of the straight, he was never! (further troubled. He proved liimjst ll’ a colt of a high order, and will igo on winning. Nothing in the ! race looked better than the favour-, j ite (Vice-Admiral), but lie shaped ! poorly. I Mr. W, G. Stead kindly supplied i the following figures in connection with the timing of the race for the Hawke’s Bay Cup:—First two furlongs in 26sec. 4 in 52sec, 5 in Imin 3 l-ssec, 6 in imin 16 l-ssec. mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, full distance in 2mm 11 2-ssec. j H. Gray (2), W. Young (2), and; Rangi Thompson, F. Flynn. H. ;. Tricklebank and A. Oliver one'/ each, rode the winning horses. i The starting was not quite up to'! Mr. Harrv Piper's pres ions best I efforts. ' i
