The “Standard” states that after the reporters left Monday’s Colonial Institute meeting, Sir John Downer, a South Australian Parliamentarian, was invited by the Chairman to speak. He referred to the Australian referendum, when Lord Carrington sharply intervened, saying “We cannot have politics here in any circumscaj.ces. This is a non-political meeting. There will be no politics d’scussed: while I am in the chair. ’ An impressive silence indicated 'he sym- ! pathy of the meeting with Sir John Downer, who apologised for the unintentional offence, and said he was sorry to have done so, an < ■ still more sorry he had been called: upon to speak. i
