SIR J. WARD BANQUETED
BY THE COMMONERS. (Received 9, 9.35 a.m.) London, May 8. The Right Hon. Lewis Harcourt, the Right Hon. Colonel Seely, Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Lady and Miss Ward, the Hon. Dr. and Mrs. Findlay, and 250 members attended a luncheon tendered to Sir Joseph Ward bv New Zealand members of the House of Commons. The Speaker, in proposing Sir Joseph’s health, said the Commoners had watched his long career with great interest. They would never forget New Zealand’s timely offer of a Dreadnought to help the Navy when possible stress was ahead. Sir Joseph Ward received a great ovation on rising to reply. He said New Zealand recognised that anything they did to help the Motherland was also helping New Zealand and the other Dominions to maintain the strength of the whole Empire. He hoped, as the outcome of the conference, some practical system would be inaugurated for assistance and preserve-; tion of the Empire. He was proud to see New Zealand so worthily represented in the House of Commons.
