A VISIT TO KARAMU. (By “Elevation.”) Accepting a long-standing invitation, I journeyed to the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Karamu stables at the beginning of the week to renew my acquaintance with the. horses in training and to see for the first time this season’s young
young thoroughbred stock. Karamu. just now, could not look better, for the welcome rains that have fallen during the past month have had a most beneficial effect on the grass, and one would not think from its appearance that we were getting into the winter months. By the courtesy of two of the employees my visit was made a most pleasant one, for what one’s memory was lacking in the names and breeding of the youngsters the other was able to rattle
off in the easiestmanner . An idea may be gained of the dimensions of the racing stables when I learn!rd that last year it took 860 bags ]of oats alone to feed its inhabitjants. Where there, is so much to I lie seen it was hard to know what to i ; start with first. However, mv first! ; attention was directed to the HORSES IN TRAINING. I ; Ortygia, who has been a bit of! i a disappointment this season, was | :the first to receive not ice, and j from her healthy appearance ami I fine breeding it is hard to account i for her weak displays. Sir Tris- i tram, who is getting on in years.) was looking in fine fettle, and now • that the sting is out of the ground ino doubt he will soon be found J measuring st rides on the race- j
(course once more. Dreadlcss has 'only recently been taken in hand 'again after spelling since the New Zealand Cup meeting. Kirk by, a full brother to Formby, who has never yet started, is a finelooking colt, and when he does face the starter he will be found quite equal to taking his part. Boilin has been having an easy time since he fell in Christchurch in November, but as he proved last winter he could act in heavy going he will soon be racing again. Morceambe. a full brother to Kairoma, is one showing the massive dimensions of most of the. Birkenhead’s, ami he is just the sort to make an ideal hurdler. Miscount has finished racing for this season, and does not appear any the worse for the strenuous time he lias had. '
1 He has raced in both Islands and in his last essay in Auckland he ; beat the best that could be found jto oppose him there, and the way Ihe beat Miss Winsome, Auckland’s j champion two-year-old, left no (doubt that -Miscount is a colt that (more will be heard of. The ap■propriately named Peary (Birkeni head —Norseman!) therefore mil I brother to North Pole and North I Head, is a likely looking cusbomI er, and when he is stepped out in l such races as a Maiden Hack or I Trial Plate he will show that he | will have to be reckoned with. Napper (Birkenhead —Snooze) will be raced over the sticks during the
winter and from the 'clever way Audax, Kairoma, and North Head could jump it seems reasonable to suppose that Birkenhead’s stock! are born jumpers. Eunersdale, Elfbolt, Faunus, Birkdaie, a three-’ year-old filly from Witchet who has [ never started, a brown gelding by j Renown — Links complete the I team that is in active work. | THE YEARLINGS. 1
A chestnut filly by Gold F<tf—j Mandola, black filly by Gold Reef i Eona, bay filly sister to Filthier. I a bay gelding from Lullaby, bay' filly from Outer, bay filly fif’l sis-! ter to Formby, and a bay eO iingj from Arethnsa are just br<A-en in, j and as is usual with the K —cm . ; youngs'. <-;*s take kimily io .r | new duties. The filly by Gold I Reif- Mandola diowe beam of! •n..,' end .or Lae ci. m... .y ■ .-j ..wh “ I
