AUSTRALIAN TRADE.
FOREIGN COMPETITION.
(Received 6, 9.20 a.m.) London, May 5.
At a meeting of the Manchester Importers and Exporters’ Association, Mr. Hamilton Wickes explained the salient features of foreign competition in Australia. Mr. Langdon, merchant, remarked that Australia was penalising a large trade by excluding preference to British goods because the finishing process was added abroad. Mr. J. K. Bythell, chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal Coo., stated that if Australian cargoes were obtainable there would be no difficulty in getting Shire liners to sail from Australia to Manchester direct.
