EXAMINATION OF LAND BALLOTERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.--Re your leader of Saturday’s issue concerning the action of the Hawke's Bay Land Board in doing away with the useless, uncaned for examination oi Crown laud applicants at land ballots. All i.pen-minded persons must agree the Board's action is. a step in the right direction, and the Commissioner should lie thanked for taking’ the lead to end the farce al the land ballots. Take the last one at Dannevirke —Goss applicants for 11 sections, examination of applicants commencing at 9 a.m.. and carried on till midnight. For what purpose? Nothing' Except to give extra work to the staff and run up the expenses of the applicants and the country, many coming long distances to take part, because they were compelled to appear as in any case. Why make the poor poorer I have been 38 years in the Dominion, brought up a family of ten. so I need hardly say that my experience is greater than my capital. I should have been pushed out of future land ballots by the man with his thousands but for the late action of the Land Board in this district. Thanking you for space.—l ant, etc..
L. WOOLLETT Nelson, South Island.
