J (Received 2. 9.55 a.m.) Sydney, May 2. Members of the Japanese expedi-' tion are reticent. From the time they left New Zealand till they decided to return they encountered extremely rough weather and a succession of gales. The ship was continually awash. Arriving off Victoria Land they proceederl along the coast to latitude 74 deg. South, longtitude 171 deg. East. They saw nothing but icebergs, snow, and penguins. After four days’ buffeting and failing to make a landing owing to large quantities of ice, they decided to return. The officers declare the expedition was purely scientific. They had no intention to attempt to reach the Pole. They propose to stay in Sydney for some time for refitting and renewing provisions, and then they will make anotheiattempt to reach the polar regions in the spring.
