■ newest thing in painting ships is not to paint tnem at all until thev have been to sea. The idea was first mooted by Air. A. C Holzapfel. r.l io ; i.ed that th** Lest method for insuring the J>rotecnon of new steel vessels was to launch ‘hem without paint, and to applv a composition onlv after the vessel had been in the water for a month nr two, and the mill scale hail torn off.
Tim steel training ship Exmouth received no nauit whatever before slm was Inunniied. and after a month or t'o she was nut in drv dock and given four coats of first class paint. After m ln g hve rears afloat, the bottom was found to be m a nerfeet state of preservation. with very little rust at the water line, and onlv a little grass and s inie coverin - a nti-fouling composition which was to b<* found in ,n thoroughly sound state of preservation.
