SUDDEN DEATH.
ON THE MARINE PARADE.
Something of a sensation was caused in Napier this morning when the news was spread around that Mr. True Dalton had dropped down dead, his demise being presumably due to heart disease. He was 83 years of age, and had come from Auckland about two years ago, and had since resided in Napier. The facts of the case are that Mr. Dalton w T as in good health this morning, and he went for his usual walk along the Marine Parade. When just opposite the Arcade he suddenly dropped down dead. Constable Cooper was in attendance, and the body was removed to the Morgue. Mr. Dalton was a grand old gentleman who was greatly respected by a wide circle of friends. In his youth he had passed through many exciting adventures both by land and sea. At one time he was on the goldfields, and often he used to tell of his narrow escape from death when surrounded by the flames of a vast prairie fire.
He was for many years a member of the “ Brethren,” and attended the usual weekly meeting at the Gospel Hall in Carlyle street last evening, when he appeared in his usual good spirits. Mr. Dalton was very w’ell connected, his brother being at one time Chief Medical Superintendent in Haslar Hospital. The kindly attentions of the deceased will be much missed by the inmates of the Napier Hospital and the Old People’s Home, at both of which places he was a constant visitor. Mr. Harry Dalton, of Napier, is a son of the deceased, and we offer our sympathy to him and his family in their sad bereavement. An inquest will be held at the Morgue at 9 o’clock to-morrow, before the District Coroner, Mr. S. E. McCarthy, S.M.
