THE LATE MR. J. C. WESTALL.

MEMORIAL SERVICE.

At the Napier Cathedral yesterday afternoon, a memorial service was conducted by Canon Mayne, when a tablet erected to the memory of the late Mr. J. C. Westall was unveiled.

; Mr. H. A. Cornford briefly I sketched the late Mr. Westall’s * career, paying high tribute to the ; many notable traits in his late e-J ; league’s character. The cerem my : (said Mr. Cornford) was unique in : his experience. Never in his life • had he seen any tablet erecv/d or . heard any service so solemnly ni secrated as this one, yet he did i not feel out of his element, nor, he , was sure, did any one of those prei sent. They were taking part >u -j | ceremony in memory of one who , was distinctly in their minds as a , man who possessed sterling vrr- ; tues. They were not unveilin-x ; tablet to the memory of a great i commander or a great public i mn, ; but only a tablet that was intendied to commemorate the modest i and manly virtues of a departed i friend. It was only proper that ■ when they met a man so modest, |so strenuously energetic and in- ' dustrious in his private life, he should be commemorated in their | minds. He (Mr. Cornford) knew how their late friend had laboured, amd how gallantly he had achieved success, and when Providence stepped m and told him he must seek health in some other land, his duty had still kept him at work. They had known him as an unobtrusive man of sterling .heart and courage, a.nd as a man who had faithfully lived up to that high ideal of duty which was characteristic of the great sailors, soldiers, and civilians of many years past. He had been a friends a citizen, and a comrade whom it w«s good to know.

The service closed with prayer, after which those present i’nspect- < d the taolet. on which is engraved:—"ln loving memorv of" our brother, John Chaddesley Westall. who was for seven years Church Advocate of the Diocese of Waiapu. Born London. 1559. Died Wellington. 1900. "Until the Dav Break ’ "
