THE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME.

(Received 21. 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, April 21.

Mr. Holman, at Gundagai, out-, lined the Government programme comprising a vigorous land development policy, the building of rail-, ways in advance of settlement, the subdivision of lands thus opened : for settlement, duplication of main lines of a new Arbitration Bill, reorganisation of public finances. which would be placed on a business-like footing, opening State ! coalmines to supply railways. More taxation is foreshadowed, the bur- I den thereof to be put on the backs of thoes who will be the best able to bear it. Other matters to be dealt with are: Linking the city of North Sydney by means of tunnels to receive immediate attention, the question of extinguishing the State debt will be vigorously faced, the intention to establish a new labour department with the object of keeping workers acquainted with the industrial conditions. He also foreshadowed a new Workmen’s Compensation Act. getting rid of the present restrictions to £2OO for the benefit of workmen permanently injured, establishment of model suburbs as workmen’s homes, wide-reaching prison law and education reforms, and the encouragement of co-operative meat works. ■
