THE CENSUS
POPULATION OF HASTINGS
Mr. S. G. Poppelwell, Chief Enumerator for Hawke’s Bay, has completed an unchecked summary of the census returns for Hastings and the Heretaunga and Maraekakaho ridings of the Hawke’s Bay district. The results are as follows :—Hastings. 6270 ; Heretaunga Riding, 2200 ; Maraekakaho Riding, 489.
A portion of the Hastings Borough was recently merged into the Heretaunga Riding of the Hawke’s Bay County, so that with the inclusion of this severed portion, the population of Hastings would be well over 7000.
The Napier returns will not be available till the early portion of next week, the delay being attributed to the indifference of householders to facilitate the collecting of the schedules.

The census of the borough of Masterton shows the population to be 5136. as compared with 5025 five years ago. A large number of the residents now live in the suburbs, and the population of greater Masterton is fully 7000.
