Fur the term ending the 15th inst :—
1. The borough employees have been engaged putting in concrete channels, levelling and sanding footpaths, cleaning drains, putting in culverts, and doing general surface work. The work of painting abattoirs has been completed, and painting cemetery fence is in progress.
2. Timber has been delivered at Cornwall Park for rustic bridges, and tarring repairs have been effected at the cemetery. 3. I beg to recommend calling for tenders for about 5000 eubir yards <>f metal from Bridge Pa Quarry in quantities as required for parching roads.
4. An amended statement of the cost of sewers will be laid before your council at first meeting. At clause I. Cr. Garnett stated
that he had been informed by Messrs. Yates and Campbell, of Napier, who have contracted for the supply of concrete slabs to the council, that an order for 10,000 slabs had been placed with their firm in addition to a previous order of 8000. This would involve an expenditure of £720, and he (Cr. Garnett) wished to know why the order had not gone through the council in the usual manner. Mr. Campbell had also told him that he had the letter enclosing the order from Mr. Hallett. Mr. Hallett, in reply, stated there must have been some misunderstanding. He had not given the order as alleged by Cr. Garnett. The first order of the council was for 4000 slabs, and this was subsequently doubled. To replace slabs which had been sold privately, another 2000 slabs had been ordered, making a total of 10.000. On the motion of Ur. Garnett, it was derided that the Town Clerk should write to Messrs. Campbell and Yates, asking for a copy of r.ll orders received from the council and Mr. Hallett. Cr. Hart remarked that the Eorough Engineer had no right to order even the 2000 slabs without the sanction of the council. Cr. Donovan complained that tl-c concrete channelling in Park r«-nd had been put on the side .vhere the least number of residences were.
Ur. McCormick supported this statement.
