NAPIER SAILING CLUB.
* LAST RACE OF THE SEASON. The last race of the Napier Sailing (.’tub's season was held on Saturday aiternoon. Seven yachts out <»E fifteen entries crossed the starting line. At the commenceisteiit u>e conditions for racing were not very lavourabie. but when about a quarter of a mile from the jetty a strong south-easterly gale ’ sprang up. and sent the yachts fly- , iug to Poraite peg at a fine pace. Once Poraite peg was rounded bal- ’ loon jibs were set ami a fast run was made to Koputai. the yachts ! gradually stringing out as the fast--ler ones drew ahead. The run ! home was made in good time, the Illinoie being first across the line, ; followed by the Maroro. The Meteor and Ngaroma. separated by boat’s length, were thinl and fourth respectively. the other yachts finishi ing all well up. The following are the times of the three placed boats: Illinoie 57 min ; Maroro, 63 min ; » Meteor. 6Smin. ’ Taken on the whole, the race i show'ed up the characteristics of I the yachts, and the breeze during the latter part of the race was all that could be desired for racing. An amusing incident occurred at the close of the race. The Doreen,
on crossing the line at the finish, got into difficulties, and the man at the tiller took a sudden flight into the water, much to his own surprise and the amusement of the onlookers, a capsize being narrowly averted.
