Dr. Widener, of Philadelphia, has purchased Rembrandt’s picture of “The Mill” from Lord Lansdowne. Palmerston North, fearing erosion of the town by the river, is forming a River Board. There is a large element of truth in the statement made by a Southern contemporary, that at present many girls are learning little or nothing about house-keeping, and seem to spend a great part of their spare time in making useless calls on their friends. If they knew a little more about cooking and the management of a home there would be much less domestic unhappiness, and possibly drink would not be the temptation it now is to many men. Mr. T. J. Thompson has asked us to state that in his address last night he made a slight error. He stated that Crs. Hart and Garnett had arranged with Mr. Solitt to pay him £350 per year for pipe inspection. On looking over his notes this morning he discovered that these two Councillors had in the first place arranged with Mr. Solitt to pay him £lO per month for the work. <The Mayor and Cr. Styles had afterwards increased the amount to £350 for. continuous in-*» spection.
