KILLED BY A TRAIN. I ANOTHER WOMAN FALLS OFF EXPRESS. [per press association.] Palmerston North, April 9. The body of Ellen Louise Oates, i who was killed on the Main Trunk [ train, near Otaki, yesterday, was | brought to Palmerston North last! night by her brother, a well-known ! local cycle and phonograph agent. ; Miss Oates was aged 26, and I, H been staying with another brother at Wellington. about two miles north of Otaki she went on to the platform and fell between the two carriages. By the time the guard could be informed the express was far past, and stopped at Manakau, where railway men were sent back with a trolley. They found the body terribly mangled, with one leg severed, and took the body back to Otaki. Death must have been instantaneous. An inquest will be
opened to-morrow morning to take Mrs. Oates’ evidence and permit the body to be taken for burial to Christchurch, where her home is. SETTLER DROWNED. . Auckland, April 10. ! Arthur Ryan Hakara. a settler, was drowned while bathing at \ Luke’s Beach. Tamaki river, Ota- i huhu, yesterday afternoon. Ryan, ; who was about 50 years of age, 1 was staying with his wife at the residence of Dr. Rowley, his bro-: tber-in-law. At three o’clock in; the afternoon he set out for a! bathe ; as he did not return when ■ expected, his relatives became anxious, instituted a search, and. discovered his clothes in the bathing hut._ Ryan s body was found two hours later on'.the beach. He was known .a good swimmer. It is surmised death resulted through cramp. -
