HASTINGS ANGLERS’ SOCIETY

AN INTERESTING EXPERIMENT.

The Hawke’s Bay Anglers’ Society, while not being a specially advertising body, nave been doing good and sound work in the field of sport, since their initiation some eighteen months ago. The members, by sub-committees, have inspected and ranged our rivers and in many ways assisted the parent Acclimatisation Society, not the least of their efforts being an experiment to foster the trout fry till they were yearlings. It is recognised that a yearling trout, when liberated, is worth at least 500 fry, and to justify this proposition the local anglers, on -~eir own initiative, decided to experiment. They obtained the use of a suitable area, at the residence of the president (Mr. A. L. D. Fraser), nad the required pond prepared, and liberated some 1500 rainbow fry. This was done last September, and under the attention and tuition of Mr. H. M. Bishop, assisted by Mr. S. Boyd (secretary to the Anglers’ Society), the results were demonstrated yesterday afternoon to the president and representatives of the Acclimatisation Society, who paid a special visrt to Hastings. The fish have developed beyond expectations ; and have all the attractions in size, depth and life that please the sportsman’s eye. Mr. Logan expressed himself more than pleased, and surprised, and indicated that the future policy of his society would be tne breeding of yearlings, and an annual grant would be made tu facilitate and extend the excellent results of the Hastings enthusiasts. It is expected that on me liberation of the present lot next. spring, preparations will be made to accommodate some ten thousand fry, which should mean the best of sport in our local riverS in the not far distant future. There was a good attendance of the local -ohermen to meet the visitors, who were all entertained later by Mrs. A. L. D. Fraser with afternoon tea.
