VOTES OF THANKS.
Recently the Napier Borough Council has been rather prodigal of its votes of thanks for services rendered. AVe do not ~ay for one moment that these expressions of appreciation have not been well deserved, but in the plenitude of its thankfulness the Council has unfortunately overlooked one person who, in the circumstances of last AA ednesday’s meeting, certainly deserved a little courteous recognition of his work. We refer to the Acting-Town Clerk, Mr. M. Murray. It will be remembered that Mr. Murray was appointed to the position of Acting-Town Clerk during the absence of Capt. Bower on holiday leave. The Captain has now returned to work, and at the in-
stance of the Mayor the Council formally varied Mr. Murray’s appointment to that of Assistant Town Clerk, pointing out that they could not have a town clerk and an actingtown clerk as well. Mr. Murray was therefore formally relieved of the responsibilities placed upon him six months ago. Now, consid-
ering the fact that « vote of thanks was passed to the Mayor, to Cr. Plowman, the Engineer, Mr. Archer, and Mr. Plested, does it not appear to the public that some trifling recognition might have been made of the able way in which Mr. Murray had fulfilled an important post during the absence of his chief ? He has shown exceptional ability and energy in carrying out his duties, and a little courteous remark or two on his retirement would have been well placed. Knowing the Councillors, we feel sure it was entirelv an unintentional omission.
