Aphaea and Bronze fought out a good finish, the former winning by a length, two lengths between second and third. Time, Imin Usee. Farewell Welter. 1 mile.—Meroze 1, Gunboat 2, Waipunui 3. Invercargill, April 6. The Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting was concluded in favourable weather with a fair attendance. The totalisator returns for the day were £7039, the total for the meeting being £14,046, an in crease of £6400 over the corresponding meeting last year. BOXING. A NEW CHAMPION. Auckland. April 6. Jack Lester. who "Tommy' Burns claims is the next man to re zain the championship of the worh for the white race from Jack John son, arrived in Auckland by th< Talunc from the Islands this morn ing. Lester, who is to meet Lanj; in Sydney on April 161 h. under Me Intosh's management. left Sai Francisco for Tahiti by the Mari posa. which, it was thought would land him in Sydney in plenty of time to train for his fignt with Lang. However. Lester only reached Auckland this morning and cannot zet to Sydney before next week, consequently a postponement of the light for at least a month will be necessary.
In a chat to-day, Lester, who is a quiet, unassuming young fellow, his appearance reminding one of his manager and trainer. "Tommy" Burns, said he had no chance to do any training on the way across as the boats w ere too small and as he suffered somewhat from sea sickness. He is at present a long way below form. The visit to Australia is principally for the purpose of gaining ring experience, and, in addition to meeting Lang, Mclntosh has promised him two other matches, but his opponents are not yet known. He will return to America in about twelve months, and Burns will then pit him against the champion, "Jack” Johnson.
Lester, who was born in Bessemer, Michigan, will be 20 years of age next month. He is sft. 9in. in
height, and in condition will weigh about Ust. 71b. He has been at the boxing game for about three years, and in amateur and professional ranks has fought 30 fights and has not yet tasted defeat, holding the title of Pacific Coast Champion. His last fight was with “Pete” Muldoon, a fast, clever man. whom he defeated in three rounds. "Tommy” Burns, who will train and manage Lester, is on his way to Sydney by the Vancouver route, and Lester will meet him in the New South Wales capital.
