CLIVE SQUARE.

The condition of Clive Square was brought up at last night’s nieeting of the Napier Borough Council by Cr. Spence. He said the complaints previously made by him stopd good at the present time. It'was a great pity that these grounds were not. regarded with more care. He thought it would be wise to shut the gates from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day. Cr. Treston agreed with what had been said by Cr. Spence and deprecated the destruction wrought there, but he did not believe in shutting up the gates. He would rather see the fences taken down altogether.

Cr. McGrath expressed pleasure at hearing this said. He would move that it be a recommendation to the new Council that all fences be removed and the people could then see what was being done. Cr. Plowman seconded, considering it a good step to do as proposed. This was done in America, and no one interfered there with the shrubs. The fence on the small square should also come down.

Cr. Niven strongly supported the proposal and referred to what had been done at Home and how King Edward had removed the fences from his grounds.

The motion was then put and carried.
