THE BOOT INDUSTRY.

INTERESTING CONFERENCE.

Auckland April 6.

A conference between representatives of manufacturers and workers in the boot industry at Auckland regarding the supply of operative labour was opened at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Dearsly held that no one who took an intelligent view of the position could fail to recognise the existence of a very real difficulty. The object of the Conference was to secure united action in representing the needs of the industry to Government.

Statements were made by the manufacturers claiming a serious shortage of both boy and girl labour.

Mr. Whiting denied that employers’ statements correctly represented the position. He alleged the shortage of labour was due to the unattractive conditions of the boot industry. The chairman said the question was whether the trade was to be stimulated by additional tariff protection, or to go out of existence. After discussion the conference adjourned.
