MEETING OF LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION.

In the Masonic Hotel last evening a general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Lawn Tennis Association was held. There was a fair attendance, Mr. F. Logan presiding. At present it was not quite certain that the New Zealand Association would allocate their championship meeting to Hawke’s Bay. Considerable discussion took place as to the relative advantages possessed by Napier, Hastings and Dannevirke. Mr. Logan stated the reason why Napier should be the meeting place was that the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association had its birth here. There were, in the initial year of the Association, the tennis courts at Farndon, which, in the opinion of tha speaker, were some of the finest in the world. If the Club still had these courts the speaker Would have no doubt as to where the championship meeting should be held.

Mr. Ebbett stated that a very important consideration was the place which could provide the greatest gate, as the expenses in connection with the meeting were very large. A rather unusual point cropped up at this stage. One member pointed out that, unless subscriptions were paid by the Ist of December the delegate in arrears would not be allowed to vote. On examination it was found that at least two delegates were in this position, and no definite date could be fixed when the others had paid. Mr. R. Alexander, as Norsewood delegate, stated that the rule should be ignored fof once, and that the delegates should be allowed to pay the subscription straight away. By so doing the Association would be doing a graceful and sportsmanlike action.' Mr. Webber moved that all those delegates who had paid their subscriptions prior to the commencement of this meeting should be allowed to vote, and that the rules should be temporarily suspended. This motion was put to the meeting and was carried by six votes to five.

Mr. Ransom, the Dannevirke delegate, moved that the present Association should signify to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association their willingness to hold the championship meeting in Hawke’s Bay. This motion was seconded by Mr. R. Alexander, and carried unanimously. Another motion that the present meeting should determine the place to be recommended to the N.Z. Association for the championship meeting, was seconded and carried.

The selection of the place was determined by ballot, and Hastings was recommended for that purpose. Mr. Logan in a few short remarks hoped that the Hastings Club would do their best to make the championship a success.
