THE CENSUS FOR 1911.
The census of 1911 will be taken on the night of Sunday next, 2nd April, 1911. The papers are to be filled up in accordance with the headings to the columns by the occupier or person in charge of the dwelling, with particulars respecting all persons who slept or abode therein on that night, together with those travelling or out at work during that night (and not included in any other schedule), and who return to the dwelling on the following day. If the house is occupied by different families in separate storeys or apartments, each such storey or apartment must be headed as a separate dwelling, and the occupier or person in charge of each must make a return upon a separate schedule. The agricultural and pastoral statistics are to be taken at the same time on this occasion, and very full instructions are given on both schedules in regard to filling up the paper. The description of all houses intended for residences which may be uninhabited, or in course of erection at the date of the taking of the census, also all shops and offices must be entered on occupiers’ or household schedules, in the proper place, with the
words “office,” “shop,” “uninhabited dwelling-house,” or “house in course of construction,” as the case may be. The attention of householders is particularly drawn towards the necessity of accurately describing their occupations. Full instructions for doing so are given on the householders’ schedule. The same applies to the agricultural statistics. The columns relating to schools demand special attention. Any person wilfully neglecting or refusing to fill up, sign, or deliver the census schedules, or answer necessary inquiries which the enumerator or subenumerator are authorised or required to make, or furnishing false returns or answers, or obstructing, is liable to a penalty of £2O. The papers will be collected on Monday. 3rd April, or as soon after as possible.
