PRESS AND OIL. New Plymouth. Mar. 30. The extraordinary activity of the Taranaki Petroleum Company’s No. 3 well is causing some alarm among the residents in. the vicinity, some of whom are looking for Shouses more remote. The roar of the gas is heard miles away. Yesterday evening enormous pressure hurst an 8-tou boiler as though it were paper. There is great difficulty’ in cont rolling the oil and water. The manager expects greater developments as the country at bottom is favourable. OIL TN SOUTHLAND. Wellington. Mar. 30. A representative of the “ Gore Ensign ” has been shown samples lof crude petroleum, the result of ! prospecting on the part of Mr. Kellv at Brydon. One sample is I rich in paraffin, the other in crude | oil alone. A large percentage of ’carbon in mineral substances indi- ! cates the presence of coal on the J same field. The mineral closely re- ! sembles that which made the fa- | mens Scottish oil industry.
