CAMORRISTS ON TRIAL.

ANOTHER DEFENCE PUT

Rome. Mar. 21.

The Camorrists, who are on their trial at Viterbo, are now attempting to set up the defence that they are the victims of false evidence manufactured by the Legion of Carabineers at Naples. They claim that the soldiers, while accomplishing the apprehension of the prisoners, sought to discredit the police of Napies and make the latter appear as being hand-in-glove with the criminal organisation.

AN AWFUL DEATH.

New York, Mar. 21.

The whaling vessel, John Manta, which has just returned to Boston, reports an extraordinary accident, by which the first mate met his death.

The victim, a practised harpooner, had planted an iron in the side of a large sperm whale, when he stepped within a loop of the line and was instantly whirled to death in the depths as the infuriated beast dived bottomwards.

London, Mar. 22. “Lloyd’s News” (London) decleares that between England and America there is only one form of rivalry, and that is purely commercial. If reciprocity is finally en dorsed, it is impossible to imagine any difference that is likely to arise between Great Britain and the United States that could not amicably and honourably be adjusted by the tribunal that President Taft proposes.

Mr. Ramsay Macdonald, M.P., the leader of the Labour Party, refuses to entertain any idea that King George will refuse to create new peers if the Lords reject the Veto Bill.

“If the King does refuse,” he says, “the issue of an inevitable election will be, ‘ Does the King reign or does he rule V ” “ There would be the biggest disturbance,” adds Mr. Macdonald, “ since the days of Charles I.”
