The Sydney 1 Referee " reports the contest as follows : —

Before a packed house at the Gaiety. Joe Costa defeated Bill Rudd after the full 20 rounds had been fought. The decision in Costa’s favour was met with a mixed reception, which was the correct one. Rudd certainly forced the fight from go to stop, and scored with a right to the left eye often enough to damage that part of Joe’s face pretty badly, but this and his continued forcing made him run a good second only to Joe’s better defensive work and clean blows by either hand. In the fourth round Rudd appeared to injure his left knee, which he held, and looked appealingly to his corner. He soon got | over it. whatever it was, and kept forcing his much cleverer opponent, whose great defensive work and good, clean left to the face, and right upper-cuts in body and on chin won for him the battle. In the 17th round Joe’s right in the body as Rudd came in nearly put the New Zealander out. He doubled up and hung on to Joe’s neck.
