BARMAID REGISTRATION.
APPLICATION FORMS ' AVAILABLE.
For some time now considerable agitation has been set up by temperance advocates against the employment of barmaids. In several Australian States the barmaid is doomed to extinction.
A copy containing extracts from the New Zealand Licensing Amendment Act (section 36) has been forwarded to the Department of Labour. It states that by the Act just quoted it is enacted that after the Ist June, 1911, save as provided below, no female shall be employed or permitted to serve in the bar of any licensed premises at any time while the bar is open for the sale of liquor. For a breach of this section licensees are liable to a fine not exceeding £lO for ever day on which the offence is committed. The proviso to the section is as follows :—
“The section shall not apply to (a) the wife, sister, or daughter of the licensee ; (b) the licensee being a woman, or (c) any person duly registered as a barmaid under the Act.”
In regard to the registration of the regulations have been gazetted, and an application form may be obtained at the Department of Labour. After June Ist any female that has not registered will not be eligible to act as a barmaid. Mr. R. T. Bailey, Factory Inspector, will forward forms on application being made.
