LAST NIGHT’S HARBOUR MEETING.

The meeting held at Taradal% las| night under the auspices of • the Harbour League afforded a splendid illustration of the success wtyich is attending the work of the organisation. The hall was packed with residents interested in the subject, and addresses were listened to with keen interest. The speech of the President (Mr. George, Nelson) was one of the best he has ever delivered, and his audience was unmistakably impressed with the honest, open policy put forward, and the speaker’s ability to advocate forcibly and logically his own side of the question without uttering a sentence which could be classed as unfair or misleading with regard to the Breakwater party. The position was placed clearly before the meeting, and it was xiot surprising that the result was an enthusiastically carried resolution at the finish. Naturally the people of Taradale wanted particularly to know about the effect the inner harbour scheme would have upon the drainage of their district, and in this respect they were not disappointed in their desire for knowledge. Mr. Nelson dealt lucidly with both the question of harbour construction and control of the fivers, showing that Taradale would npt only be free from all danger from resricted drainage, but could not fail to benefit materially in every way by the construction of the harbour. His remarks regarding the river question were a revelation, and it looks very much as it the inner harbour works will play a big hand in solving the flood problems of the plains. Taradale has given the district a valuable lead in showing its marked appreciation of an honest, fearless policy which stands for the advancement of the district.
